Pakistan Currency Redesign New Notes Expected in Pakistan 2025

The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP), led by Governor Jameel Ahmed, is set to redesign all Pakistani currency notes with advanced security features to combat counterfeiting. The proposal has been submitted for cabinet approval, with a target rollout starting June 2025, pending approval.
The new notes, covering denominations of Rs10, Rs20, Rs50, Rs100, Rs500, Rs1,000, and Rs5,000, will be introduced gradually, one denomination at a time, starting in the second half of 2025. The first note is expected by the fiscal year 2025-2026 (July 2025). However, the specific denomination to be launched first remains undisclosed.

Expected Launch Date
The proposal for new designs has already been submitted to the Government Cabinet for approval. If approved on time, the redesigned currency notes are likely to begin rolling out around June 2025.

Security Paper Limited (SPL), responsible for printing, requires new machines to accommodate the enhanced security features. SPL has awarded an Rs3.4 billion upgrade project to German firm Giesecke+Devrient, with completion expected in 18 months, potentially delaying the rollout beyond mid-2025. The SBP plans to test a polymer plastic note in one denomination, expanding if successful.

Printing Delays & Technical Challenges
Security Paper Limited, the company responsible for printing currency, has indicated that new printing machines are needed to produce these redesigned notes — especially because they will come with enhanced security features. As of now, those machines haven’t been purchased, which might delay the process further.
